The dresses are longer, the skirts are A-lined and the trousers are cropped. Materials are a mixture of textures with knits and crochet, leather and suede – the chocolate brown suede shorts and jacket are key drifts. These rich textures are combined with denim – one of the star fabrics for spring summer.

Colours are a combination of muted pastel shades with pops of coral and indigo. Soft ruffle detailing and feminine prints, which take inspiration from the orient, create a seventies romantic bohemian look. Oversized peasant blouses are teamed with button front denim skirts and bell bottom jeans, matched with high platforms and felt hats creating a classic seventies silhouette.

For SS15 culottes are in pink leather and trousers are loose and wide – creating a new elegant shape. A fresh and modern feel updates this season’s Sports Luxe trend. Clean, simple lines create the look for the utility nineties inspired collection. Minimal boxy, cropped jackets in a variety of fabrics and textures – from neoprene to sheer and mesh – mixed with the cigarette trouser creates a sleek look.

The most common problem faced is: ‘There is not enough space!’ Multiple requirements such as bed, lounge, study, storage, dressing and bathroom have to be accommodated in the same space. With proper planning, maximizing space utilization, dedicated function allotment and using modular fittings to your advantage, one can create enough space. For instance, use a queen size bed instead of a king size. Opt for wider side tables for better storage and circulation space. Accommodate a chest of drawers in the room. It can go a long way on saving storage space for shoes and bed linens. Take advantage of wall height and accommodate shelving systems. They can take load of books, decorative artworks and trinkets. Combine the wardrobe and bathroom. Excessive walls take on space and create more hassle than utility in small spaces. Use sliding shutters for wardrobes as they reduce circulation space required and provide more spacious wardrobes that can be wider than usual. Glass shower enclosures are more practical, space and water saving than bath tubs. They can be as small as 30 square inches in size. Large mirrors in the bathroom can give the illusion of space and be highly utilitarian.

Often, new couples find it hard to agree on a colour as women naturally tend to opt for warmer, earthen colours and men prefer cool colours on a palette of grey-black. Choose a neutral base palette to later add colour with accessories of your choice. Use light pastel shades of any colour. They are not too dominating yet add warmth and cool feeling at the same time. Avoid blaring loud colours like red or shocking pink. These can be added in moderation with accessories or furnishings on a neutral colour palette as well. Beiges, browns and wood shade teamed with white or cream is the most popular and subtle colour combination for master bedrooms of all ages. Pale blue, aqua, peach, lavender, ocean green, corn yellow can be a few good colours for a newlywed’s room.

The cheerful, windswept collection comprised of layered tunics, shirt dresses and shift dresses. The line of outfits showed almost no traces of prints—this was a classic example of minimal fashion.

Rina showcased tea dresses, dresses with handkerchief hems, A-line trapeze, boxy, midi, and long shirt dresses and tunics. Jackets were made of linens with patches of floral prints washed over them and then of course, the summer coats invited a lots of applauds! Trousers sported oversized hems, wide and small legs and pegged and relaxed boyish cuts that were paired with boxy shirts, knit tops and gathered, lightweight khadi embroidered tops.

Embellishments revolved around kantha stitches on washed horizontal linen ombre stripes; also, kantha textures mixed with floral appliqués, coupled with delicate thread embroidery work marked the collection.

Subtle prints here and there added the right dose of whimsicality to the range—painterly floral, ombre-dyed hand-painted flowers, ditsy pixilated dots and prints, and manipulated floral dot prints, played peek-a-boo in layers of linens and cottons tinted in pastel palettes of sky blue, blush pink, minty green and lavender mixed with lightest of grays and whites.

His collection revolved around structured pastel silhouettes; this was blended with sharp cuts and minimal accessories to accentuate looks in entirety. The satin-finish dresses with embellishments and flares lingered in my mind for a couple of days! The bow detailing, ruffled sleeves, well-fitted, linear trousers, and perfect inculcation of sheer invited cheer for the designer.

Controlled embellishments, detailed embroidery work and intricate surface techniques exuded an overall elegance. The Samurai armour was emulated in many of the garments, with strong shoulders, sashes and sleeves that fluttered out from the elbow. Feather-like corsage units featured on some of the garments, swaying with the wearer’s movement, resembling frail underwater coral.

Gaurav Jai Gupta displayed a symphony of fabulous textiles at Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2014. The most distinct aspect in a Gaurav Jai Gupta show is always the fabulously woven textiles with weaves and yarns that defy imagination. For the fashion week, Gaurav’s collection for his label ‘Akaaro’ presented ‘Meen’, a line, which had exclusive hand woven fabrics in fulia, lycra, silk, chanderi, cotton and zari from Bengal and Benaras.

The collection was inspired by underwater reflections in urban Indian landscapes. Using discreet, toned down metallic colours as the base; Gaurav added some pastel accents for an added impact. Emphasising on strong woven detailing in some segments, the collection’s ensembles were all engineered to perfection. The colour story was as interesting as the weaves with black, golden and grey in variations moved onto blue and silver.

Proving his mastery over weaves and stripes, the saris with crushed pallus worn with an assortment of pleated waist coat, front open jacket, acid yellow silk cropped shirt or striped long sleeve silk cotton blouses were beauties on the ramp. Simple basics like kurtas and pants, long practical cotton achkan dresses, tunics with hints of glimmer, engineered cotton zari waist coat/maxi and asymmetrical jacket with cotton dhoti pants, had weaves that were exclusive as well as intricate.
